Meet Bielik, polish LLM player!

This is a Polish language model from the LLM (Large Language Models) category, with a potential of 11 billion parameters! It was created thanks to the collaboration between the SpeakLeash Foundation team and the Academic Computer Center Cyfronet AGH. To “train” Bielik, two of the fastest supercomputers in Poland—Helios and Athena—were used 🖥️

LLM developed in Poland

In recent years, artificial intelligence has made significant strides globally, with various countries contributing unique advancements to this rapidly evolving field. Among these contributions is Bielik AI, a remarkable large language model (LLM) developed in Poland. This innovative AI is not just a technological achievement; it represents a significant milestone for Poland, positioning the country as a key player in the AI landscape.

The creator of Bielik, Sebastian Kondracki from SpeakLeash, pointed out that the most challenging task was acquiring data in the Polish language, which was possible only based on well-verified source data. Bielik is expected to perform much better in generating content that takes into account cultural context and national regulations.

The genesis of Bielik AI

Bielik AI is the brainchild of the SpeakLeash Foundation, a Polish organization dedicated to advancing AI and machine learning technologies. The project was brought to life through a collaboration between the SpeakLeash team and the Academic Computer Center Cyfronet AGH, one of Poland’s leading research institutions.

The development of Bielik AI was no small feat—it involved training the model using two of Poland’s fastest supercomputers, Helios and Athena. This extensive computational power was essential to manage the model’s immense potential, which boasts 11 billion parameters, making it one of the most sophisticated AI models in the country.

Key features and capabilities

Bielik AI is part of the LLM (Large Language Models) category, a class of AI systems designed to process and generate human language with a high degree of fluency and understanding. Its capabilities are extensive, allowing it to engage in complex language tasks such as text generation, translation, summarization, and context-aware conversation. What sets Bielik AI apart from other models is its deep integration of Polish language and cultural context. This allows Bielik to generate content that not only makes sense grammatically but also resonates culturally, taking into account local nuances, idioms, and legal regulations specific to Poland.

One of the most significant challenges the creators faced was the acquisition of high-quality, verified data in the Polish language. Unlike English, where a vast amount of data is readily available, Polish language data required meticulous collection and verification. This ensured that Bielik AI could produce accurate and culturally relevant outputs, making it highly reliable for Polish users.

The importance of Bielik AI for Poland

Bielik AI’s development marks a critical moment for Poland, signifying the country’s growing influence in the global AI sector. Historically, most AI advancements have been dominated by English-speaking countries, leading to a concentration of technology and innovation in these regions. By developing a powerful language model tailored to the Polish language, Poland is asserting its place in the AI revolution, ensuring that its language, culture, and legal frameworks are represented in the digital world.

Moreover, Bielik AI’s ability to understand and generate content in Polish has significant implications for various sectors within the country. From improving customer service through more intuitive chatbots to enhancing content creation in media and entertainment, Bielik AI is poised to revolutionize how businesses and organizations operate in Poland. It also opens up opportunities for the development of AI-driven solutions that cater specifically to Polish regulations and societal needs, something that has been largely underrepresented in the global AI market.

A look to the future

The launch of Bielik AI is just the beginning. As the model continues to evolve, there is potential for its application to expand beyond Poland, offering a blueprint for developing AI models that are deeply integrated with other languages and cultures. The success of Bielik AI could inspire similar initiatives in other non-English-speaking countries, promoting greater diversity in AI development and usage.
