Low-code with Mendix

Changing the way software is built

We’ll take a closer look at a platform that helps teams build apps faster, work better together, and launch solutions quickly on any device or cloud. In this article, you’ll discover what makes Mendix a powerful tool for delivering modern, agile applications.

What Is Mendix and why it matters?

Mendix is a low-code development platform designed to help businesses build applications faster, easier, and with less effort than traditional coding. Instead of writing thousands of lines of code, developers use visual modeling tools to design applications. This approach is faster, reduces errors, and opens development to a wider group of people, including non-programmers. Founded in 2005 and now part of Siemens, Mendix is used worldwide to create web, mobile, and enterprise-grade applications. Its mission is to speed up digital transformation by enabling developers and business teams to work together on one platform.

What makes Mendix stand out is the balance it offers between ease of use and technical depth. Business users can start creating apps without programming knowledge, while professional developers can add custom code, integrations, and advanced logic when needed. Mendix supports full application lifecycle management: from idea, through development, testing, deployment, to monitoring and updates. This makes it not just a development tool, but a complete software delivery environment.

Application modeling: visual logic, data, and UX

The heart of Mendix is visual modeling. Every part of an application – from data models and logic to user interfaces – is built using drag-and-drop tools.

Data Modeling

You define the structure of your app using the domain model, where entities (like database tables) and their relationships are created visually. Each entity can have attributes (such as name, date, price) and associations to other entities (one-to-many, many-to-many).

Mendix automatically generates the database schema based on the domain model and keeps it in sync with your application logic. You can also define access rules to control who can read, edit, or delete data.

Application Logic

Instead of writing backend code, Mendix uses microflows and nanoflows:

  • Microflows are used for server-side processes like saving data, validating input, calling APIs, or making decisions. They look like flowcharts with activities and decision points.

  • Nanoflows run on the client side (browser or mobile device) and are used for fast or offline interactions.

Both types of flows support actions like conditionals, loops, database queries, and REST calls – all created visually.

UI Design

Mendix provides a powerful page editor for building user interfaces. Pages are built with widgets such as text boxes, buttons, lists, charts, maps, and forms. These are responsive by default, meaning they work on desktops, tablets, and phones.

You can choose from page templates, design your own layouts, and apply themes using Mendix’s Atlas UI design system. For more control, developers can build custom widgets using React and JavaScript.

. From creating data models to integrations, developers can build with confidence and take on complex tasks with ease.

Integrations, APIs, and enterprise connectivity

A strong feature of Mendix is how well it connects with other systems. This is essential in enterprise environments, where apps must work with databases, services, and platforms like SAP or Salesforce.

API Integration

Mendix supports both REST and SOAP web services. You can:

  • Consume external APIs – for example, to get shipping rates, weather data, or customer records.

  • Expose your own application logic as APIs for use by other systems.

The process of creating or consuming APIs in Mendix is visual and guided, so even complex integrations are easier to manage.

System Integration

Mendix offers out-of-the-box connectors and Marketplace components for systems like:

  • SAP

  • Microsoft Azure

  • AWS services

  • Salesforce

  • IBM Watson

  • PostgreSQL, Oracle, and other databases

It also allows developers to write Java actions or use JavaScript for custom logic, giving full flexibility when a visual model isn’t enough.

Mendix supports modern authentication standards like OAuth2, SAML, Active Directory, and LDAP, making it easy to connect with identity providers and single sign-on systems.

Deployment, scaling, and cloud options

Once your app is ready, you need to deploy it. Mendix supports a range of deployment options, suitable for both small teams and global enterprises.

Cloud Deployment

Mendix provides its own Mendix Cloud built on AWS, with built-in environments for development, testing, and production. With one-click deployment, you can move your app between environments, run automated tests, and monitor performance.

If you need more control, Mendix can also be deployed to:

  • Private cloud (Kubernetes or OpenShift)

  • Microsoft Azure

  • Amazon Web Services

  • SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP)

  • On-premise servers

This flexibility allows Mendix apps to run where your business needs them most.

Scalability and Performance

Mendix apps scale automatically in the cloud, and you can fine-tune performance using built-in tools:

  • APM (Application Performance Monitoring) for tracing slow microflows

  • Log analysis tools

  • Health dashboards showing uptime, memory usage, and database stats

You can also configure horizontal scaling and auto-healing, especially in containerized environments.

. From creating data models to integrations, developers can build with confidence and take on complex tasks with ease.

Collaboration, security, and lifecycle management

Mendix supports team collaboration, secure development, and long-term application maintenance – all from a single platform.

Team Development

Mendix uses Git-based version control, allowing teams to:

  • Create branches for new features

  • Merge changes with conflict resolution tools

  • Work in parallel without risk of data loss

It supports automated deployments, CI/CD pipelines, and integrates with tools like Jenkins, Azure DevOps, and Jira.

The Mendix Developer Portal acts as a control center: managing app versions, feedback from users, deployment environments, and more.

Security

Security in Mendix is handled on every level:

  • User roles and access control at the page, entity, and logic level

  • Encrypted storage, audit logging, and data validation

  • Compliance with ISO 27001, GDPR, SOC 2, and other standards

You can also implement custom security rules, use two-factor authentication, and apply role-based permissions dynamically.

App Lifecycle Management

Mendix tracks your application through its entire lifecycle:

  • Idea and design: via stories and feedback tools

  • Development and testing: with version control and environments

  • Deployment: through automated pipelines or manual release

  • Operation and support: with monitoring, crash reporting, and logs

This end-to-end control helps reduce technical debt and keeps applications maintainable over time.

. From creating data models to integrations, developers can build with confidence and take on complex tasks with ease.

Conclusion

Mendix is more than just a low-code tool – it’s a complete application development and delivery platform. It combines the simplicity of visual modeling with the power of full-stack development, allowing both business and IT to work together effectively.

From designing data models to deploying secure, scalable apps in the cloud, Mendix helps teams innovate faster, reduce costs, and respond to market changes in real-time.

If your organization needs to modernize legacy systems, improve business processes, or build new digital products – Mendix is a platform worth exploring.
